Donations to free software
Words by Daniel Aleksandersen on 2008-06-06
In the end of May I made a $ 100 USD donation to Software in the Public Interest, Inc. (SPI). As usual I encourage other users to make a small donation as well.
| Project | Amount |
|---|---|
| Total USD | $ 100 |
| Debian Project | $ 50 |
| FreeDesktop.org | $ 25 |
| PostgreSQL | $ 10 |
| OpenOffice.org | $ 10 |
| SPI General Fund | $ 5 |
This is a doubling of my contribution to SIP from last year with the introduction of the FreeDesktop.org and OpenOffice.org projects.
I have not made any contributions to KDE, ev. yet. Though I will most probably donate funds later this year too.
OO.o: No OpenType, yet
Words by Daniel Aleksandersen on 2008-05-22
I spent two hours only to find that OpenOffice.org (OO.o) does not support OpenType fontfaces yet. That is a shame, as OpenType have become a standard in both Mac OS and Windows.
There are plans to support OpenType in OO.o 3.
X(HT)ML not (X)HTML
Words by Daniel Aleksandersen on 2008-05-15
Since XML is the way we want to go—at least it is the way I want the web to go—, then I think it is better to refer to The Extensible Hypertext Markup Language and Hypertext Markup Language as X(HT)ML instead of (X)HTML. To emphasise the focus on XML.
Instant messaging collaboration
Words by Daniel Aleksandersen on 2008-02-24
Tim Julien wrote an interesting piece about how proprietary instant messaging networks—such as AIM and Y!M—are experimenting with the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP). If this works out, we can finally say bye bye to contact–network incompatibilities in messaging clients.
