Fixing KNetworkManager in Debian
Words by Daniel Aleksandersen on 2008-04-24
KNetworkManager, KDE’s front‐end to network-manager, requires to be run as root to operate the network interfaces. Sounds like a familiar problem? The solution is to add the user running KNetworkManager to the netdev group using a tool such as KUser.
Interface concept: Collapsing menu line
Words by Daniel Aleksandersen on 2008-04-19
Windows puts the menu line right underneath the title line at the top of every window. (See illustration 1.) Mac OS puts it at the very top for the active window. (See illustration 2.) KDE lets the user choose from one of the two. All desktop environments gives the not-so-frequently-used menu line much importance in their interfaces. But does the menu line really need all that dedicated space? Maybe it is time to think different.
L10N = nb
Words by Daniel Aleksandersen on 2008-03-11
I finally made up my mind, and changed my language settings in the K Desktop Environment to my native language, Norwegian Bokmål (nb), instead of British English. This completes my system localisation (L10N) and marks a personal language‐turning point for me.
Nokia aming for Opera?
Words by Daniel Aleksandersen on 2008-01-28
Nokia have acquired Trolltech, the Norwegian company behind the open source Qt technology. A technology found in software products such as the KDE, Skype, and Opera. Most news site are focusing on how this will affect KDE and other open source projects. I do not think Nokia’s main goal with this acquisition is to get control over the desktop computing trough KDE, as the web is buzzing about today. I think their target is the mobile web browser market trough Opera, another Norwegian software developer dependent on Qt.
