Gutsy Gibbon broke my email and more
The latest KUbuntu 7.10 release looked really promising. A new version of KDE, updated as well as some new software, and everything. But the upgrade from 7.04 did not go seamlessly for me. Here are the problems I am facing after upgrading:
- KMail does not run at all.
- Signing out of KDE sessions causes the wallpaper to be set to default.
- No video player other than VLC can play video. (Xine partly broken and I get weird errors regarding my screen drivers.)
- Computer speakers keep playing when a headset is in use.
- The K-Menu was lost and then found again. (It is a complete mess.)
- A notable increase in power consumption.
I am collecting data and submitting bugs as fast as I can. Hopefully my bug reports will help others in the future.
I am looking at downgrading or trying a clean install whenever I get the chance. I do not have a backup hard drive available. Uninstalling or formatting will mean huge data losses.
Update
Running sudo aptitude install kdepim-dev and accepting downgraded packages fixes the KMail issue some users are having.
The audio and video issues I am having are due to a security update in the Linux kernel. Recompiling the components should fix the problems. But it has not worked for me.

Our Ubuntu machine (high spec Core Duo) crashed half way through the upgrade, so we decided to stick with 7.04 for the moment.

Unless you're a KDE purist, and want the least amount of Gnome stuff as possible, I would recommend installing totem(xine) through automatix. That ought to solve your video playback problems.
Power consumption can be adjusted by disabling unused services. One of the first things I do after an Ubuntu upgrade is disable the services I don't use, and/or correspond to hardware I don't have (bluetooth).
Although a bit more buggy in some places, you might have better luck in general with your KDE system and apps if you were to install the development version of KDE 4.

I think my broblems lies with the KDE libararys. I updated KDE the day before I upgraded to Gutsy. I had not made that connection earlier. Anyhow. Things are still broken for me.
The audio out part is the biggest problem for me. I cannot listen to podcasts or anything!
