Dear Web Hosts of the World
Long story short: If you are one of the many web hosing companies that is still holding on to Apache 1.3: Upgrade!
The Apache server 2.x series—released five years ago—has many advantages to the old 1.3 release. Especially when working with content negotiation. There are many bugs that have been fixed and significant speed improvements as well.
But still most web hosting companies choose to not upgrade. Which is absolutely ridicules.
When asked why, most respond with a standard we have heard from others that it is a security risk
. The second most popular respond is that we will not upgrade so that the two users that are using FrontPage Extensions still can be our costumers.
Those reasons are no good. There are more known security holes in Apache 1.3 than in the 2.x series. I will admit that Microsoft Extensions will not work with the new series. However there is no point waiting for Microsoft to upgrade these extensions! They have had five years, but are still not showing any signs of wanting to do so.
I mean web hosts should do that job they are paid for and provide the best possible hosting environment for their consumers. That does not involve ten year old software.
