I am sorry to hear about your bad experiences with Linux. But it is well known that Windows programs—especially games—does not run on anything but the operating system they were written for. However: You should consider dual booting.

That way, you could stay safe and sound on a Linux system; but also have a Windows installation ready for gaming and commercial software. I know this is how many gamers do it. You get just about everything but the games for Windows on Linux.

Ubuntu is trying to be Mac OS and Windows, and is failing in doing so. Other distributions does a better job of being Linux desktops; but are not as compatible and easy to install. (Not that the latter is what makes a Linux desktop.) You may want to consider using another distribution.

They get it for free on the computer they just bought. So "I'm getting $239 for free" and that's a lot better in peoples' minds than "I'm getting $0 for free".

And again; nobody buys windows. One dude downloads it off Bit Torrent, and shares it with a hundred friends. Or one dude buys it, and installs it company wide. Anyone intelligent to install software, let alone and OS, is smart enough to use bit torrent. Windows isn't sold. It's a give-away, and practically /as/ gratis as Linux. I agree with previous comments about incompatibility. I tried Linux for the first time today, running Ubuntu 8.10 on a dual-boot on my XP laptop.

What a joke! The wireless card doesn't work and needs some ridiculously long workaround that requires you to become a programming expert; the Nvidia driver won't install properly; there's not even an MP3 codec included, I mean wtf?!?

I'm really disappointed. I thought I was going to get a nice new alternative OS but all I got was a bunch of problems that no-one seems to know how to fix despite trawling a ton of geek forums. When I can install Linux and EVERYTHING works straight away then I might be persuaded, but until then I'm sticking with XP.

I have to agree with the ubuntu haters, i personally use an 08 XPS running vista with no problems yet, but i know there are some …anyway back my ubuntu problem……….i also purchased a dell mini 9 with "preloaded not bought" ubuntu software. it is so terrible, the mini has so many issues now its not even funny, i would like to slap the shit out of the person responsible for creating such a worthless piece of software. When i login i as the admin and try to do lets say…wireless network for example…it tells me access denied, must be an admin to perform this task…i am the admin. wtf!!! oh lets not forget the automatic updates.. it shows 169 updates available but when i try to install it errors out everytime and have tried several different sites to download the updates from.So in my opinion, i hate ubuntu and wouldnt recommend it to my worst enemy!

ubuntu is a great os for linux beginners. easy to use and install. if your more of a linux power user you will want to use what ever you have been using. i would still recommend ubuntu for newbie's that being said, most of the people who posted are idiots. please read a book on linux open source e rules.

Ubuntu is certainly not the best OS for gamers.Far from it. On the other hand it has proven to be an excellent option for business applications. After some two years using the various Ubuntu and Open Office versions, we are now running 50 plus computers with Intrepid and Open Office 3.0. No problems and no cost. Everything works.
The downside is that before buying the hardware, you have to do a little research regarding computer compatibility with the desired OS. The first time I installed Ubuntu, I made the mistake of assuming the OS could be installed on any computer and that it would simply require a little tweaking to benefit from the full functionality of the system. I was wrong. The reason for this I found, was that some component manufacturers were not producing the needed drivers or code for Linux (or in my case the Ubuntu OS). Even though my first installation didn't produce optimum results, I saw enough to do the research and choose a more appropriate hardware configuration and the result today is nothing short of stellar. If your responsibilities include driving cost efficiencies and productivity in a business application environment, then this is pure genius. If you are still living with your parents, those considerations do not apply.

2. Control Panel in Ubuntu? That doesn't exit! JAJA! It's soo easy, right? So, tell me HOW THE FUCK CAN I CHANGE MY GRAPHIC CARD DRIVER USING A GUI. 'Cause I cannot find it, so where is the EASY TO USE?

3. Big Repository of Software SOTOLLEN FROM DEBIAN, great, really you must be so fucking proud of your work. Doing a distro like that any fucking asshole without a brain can do that.

4. Every fucking review has to have the fucking Ubuntu. No other distros, just the shitty Ubuntu.

5. Stability? Thats only on Dual Cores, old machine users are FUCKED.

6. Xubuntu? Kubuntu? Nice joke, really.

7. And of course, Gobuntu, where the HELL IS THE 100% FREE UBUNTU? It's there but you have to look for it throught the god damn servers, and that's not fucking fair,

Ubuntu sucks… I did a dist-upgrade, sound broke. I was able to fix it, and the GUI had an HORRIBLE lag, without Compiz. I was able to run compiz flawlessly before… So I'm just in damn microcrap.

I wonder if similar things happen in Debian?
